Crystals for Gowns - Hotfix
Welcome to the wonderful world of Glue On embellishments that Rhinestones & Beads have available for brides to be.
Whether you want to glue diamantes onto your gown, your shoes, your wedding invitations/place-cards, ring pillow, toasting glasses, cake board, table decorations... the most popular choice is a flatback rhinestone in the classic facetted round diamante shape. These come in a huge range of sizes, from tiny ss6 (1mm across) all the way up to ss40 (8.5mm across) so you'll be able to create everything from an all-over delicate twinkle through to a striking focal design.
'Hotfix', 'hot-fixing', 'heat-fix crystals'...
...all involve an applicator tool and flatback rhinestones ('diamantes', 'crystals') that have a heat-sensitive glue already on the back. The tool picks up individual rhinestones, heats them, the glue melts and the rhinestone is ready to place on your article.
That sounds easy doesn't it? Well, yes and no. Because the applicator tool tip reaches quite a high temperature, you've got to be careful it doesn't come in contact with anything that will scorch or melt - card stock, satin or veiling for example. So a bit of practice is needed to get your technique perfect before you start on the real thing but instructions and helpful advice are included with every tool.
Interestingly, hotfix is the method used by most commercial manufacturers of bridal wear, so it certainly has it's place. Lots of people also use hotfix rhinestones for commercial wedding invitations and shows.
Also consider the wonderful and easy choice of readymade Swarovski Iron-On Rhinestone Transfers, which come in a lovely assortment of designs and styles, all able to be applied really easily with a domestic iron. Almost instant embellishment!
Next, which colour...
The most popular colour is called 'Crystal' and it's the one that looks like a little mirror. This mirror look is acheived by the foiled backing on the underside of the diamante (rhinestone) and gives it an extra sparkle. Rhinestones are also available as an unfoiled diamante which is simply called 'Clear' - because it is. Without the foiled backing it's not nearly as sparkly but it does create a very subtle shine if that's the effect you're wanting to achieve.
Next most popular colour for wedding gowns is 'Crystal AB'. This is the 'Crystal' colour described above but with the addition of a beautiful coating called Aurora Boreale on the top which gives a rainbow sparkle to the stone. This colour looks beautiful on raw silk, creams and champagne colours. You can read more about the AB coating here.
Other gorgeous choices on the champagne colours that are very popular for gowns at the moment are 'Crystal Golden Shadow' and 'Silk'.
