Crystals for Gowns - Sew On

Sew-On embellishments are also a wonderful way to decorate your planned projects. They have the advantage that they can always be taken off and re-used at a later date if you want to recycle them onto your child's christening gown or dancing dress!

Whether you want to sew diamantes onto your gown, ring pillow, cake ribbon, table decorations, just about anything that can be sewn onto... the range is huge. From flatbacks jewels to diamante banding, from crystal buttons to pearls, or from beads to droppers, we have them all.

Let's start with your gown embellishment...

There are two types of 'Sew On Crystals' that you need to be aware of.

The first type is the 'foil-backed' type.

All foiled rhinestone products give off a diamante type sparkle just like a mirror. These can come as (Lochrosen) - flatbacked rhinestones with a small hole in the middle, Sew On Jewels - also flatback but usually with more than one hole, Montees - little diamantes set in a metal backing which has sewing/threading holes through the setting, Buttons - functional or decorative, or Banding - strips of rhinestones joined together into a long length.

The second type of Sew On Crystal is the 'see-through' type.

Think beads, bicones, and droppers. Here the product sparkles and twinkles from the facets on the surface of the product and the light refraction from within the crystal itself. Think prisms.

They come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, but by far the most popular on wedding gowns is the 'bicone' shape - 3mm, 4mm and 5mm sizes - as they sit down relatively closely to the fabric and are the most delicate, modern and affordable beaded look being used at the moment. There are also several tear-drop shaped top-hole (or top-to-bottom hole) droppers that make the most beautiful accents.

Next are the traditional Sew On Pearl options.

Lots of brides like to have their gown embellished with small round pearls - 3mm, 4mm, 5mm sizes but we also have larger drop pearls and twisted pearl shapes for gorgeous accents.

Lots of girls mix and match several elements to achieve a textured and professional look. But there is nothing to stop you using just crystals, or pearls or rhinestones if that is the look you want to acheive. Remember there is no right or wrong!

What about the other things I want to embellish?

There's lots of uses for the rhinestone trims, especially the Rhinestone Banding - either in single strips of rhinestones or our amazing 24 row banding which of course you can cut to what ever width you like. These bandings are used quite a lot on cake ribbons, cake boards and bouquet cuffs.

We also see a lot of veils edged with tiny pearls or dotted with bicones. And don't forget that whatever is available in bridal colours is often available in colours suitbale for your bridesmaids. That's one of the things we love about crystals.

However, most surfaces apart from fabric would be hard-pressed to get a needle through, so for most other embellishment projects for your wedding you would be looking at the Glue On section. Let's face it, gluing on rhinestones to your placecards is going to be a lot quicker than sewing them on!

Next, which colour...

The colour "Crystal' in a see-through product like a bicone or dropper is totally clear. The colour 'Crystal AB' is simply 'Crystal' with the addition of a beautiful partial coating called Aurora Boreale on the top which gives a subtle rainbow sparkle. This colour looks beautiful on raw silk, creams and champagne colours. You can read more about the AB coating here .

Other gorgeous choices on the champagne colours that are very popular for gowns at the moment are 'Crystal Golden Shadow' and 'Silk'.
